How to Safely Wear & Care for 6-Month Contact Lenses: Beginner's Hygiene & Storage Guide

Maximize Comfort & Lifespan for Your 6-Month Colored Contacts

6-month colored contact lenses offer an incredible balance of affordability, durability, and style variety. Because they are designed to be worn over an extended period, establishing a clean, hygienic daily routine is the single most important step to keeping your eyes healthy and your lenses feeling like new every time you put them on.

Step 1: The Golden Rule Before First Wear

When you first unbox your contact lens vials or blister packs, do not wear them immediately. The factory packaging contains saline storage solution with preservatives that can sting sensitive eyes.

  • Carefully transfer the lenses into a clean contact lens case.
  • Fill the case with fresh, multi-purpose contact lens solution.
  • Soak them for at least 6 to 8 hours before wearing them for the first time.

Step 2: Safe Insertion & Removal Routine

Putting Them On:

  1. Wash & Dry Your Hands: Always use mild soap and dry your hands with a lint-free towel.
  2. Check the Lens Shape: Place the lens on the tip of your index finger. If the edges curve smoothly upwards like a clean bowl, it is right-side out. If the edges flare slightly outward like a soup rim, flip it.
  3. Insert Before Applying Makeup: Put your lenses in before applying primer, eyeshadow, or mascara to prevent cosmetic particles from getting trapped beneath the lens.

Taking Them Off:

  1. Wash Your Hands: Clean your hands thoroughly before touching your eyes.
  2. Remove Before Washing Face / Removing Makeup: Always remove your contacts before using cleansing oils, micellar water, or face washes.
  3. Look Up & Slide: Look upward, gently pull down your lower lid, slide the lens down to the white part of your eye, and pinch it out gently with the pads of your thumb and index finger.

Step 3: The "Rub & Rinse" Cleaning Method

Even if your multi-purpose solution bottle says "no rub", eye care professionals strongly recommend the rub-and-rinse technique to remove daily protein and lipid buildup:

  • Place the removed lens into the palm of your hand and add a few drops of fresh solution.
  • Gently rub the front and back surfaces in a back-and-forth motion with your clean finger pad for about 10–15 seconds.
  • Rinse thoroughly with a stream of fresh solution before storing.
  • Never use tap water or saliva: Tap water contains microscopic organisms (like Acanthamoeba) that can cause severe eye infections. Only use sterile multi-purpose lens solution.

Step 4: Contact Lens Case Care

Your lens case is just as important as the lenses themselves:

  • Empty and rinse your case daily with fresh contact lens solution (never tap water), and let it air-dry upside down on a clean tissue.
  • Always use 100% fresh solution every night; never "top off" or reuse yesterday's liquid.
  • Replace your lens case every 2 to 3 months to prevent bacterial biofilm buildup.

General Eye Safety Reminders

  • Never sleep in your lenses: Sleeping in contact lenses deprives your corneas of oxygen and drastically increases the risk of eye irritation.
  • Rest your eyes: Limit wear time to 6–8 hours a day, especially during your first week.
  • Track the calendar: Mark the date you opened your lenses. After 6 months of use, dispose of them and treat yourself to a fresh pair!
